Sunday School

By Elaine Bardwell - Posted on 20 November 2010

The Sunday School provision has been revised from Autumn 2010. We now run groups for 2-4 year olds, 5-8,  8-10 and 11+. We are flexible about age and try to fit each child into the best group for them. Babies and toddlers are welcome. All our session leaders and helpers are CRB checked. Our teenagers take a turn serving in the sanctuary at the main 10am Sunday Eucharist once a month and at the special festivals.
Sunday School now runs at 10am every Sunday. At Communion time in church the children line up to receive a blessing and a piece of bread specially blessed called the 'Antidoron' (which is clearly distinct from the Communion wafers) for them and other non communicants.
The whole congregation welcomes children as an integral part in the life of the Church and we are working on new ways to recognize the place our youngest members already enjoy in our midst. We had a very successful All Age Eucharist recently and the Vicar is now planning similar events for the coming year. All our groups will be actively involved in preparing the worship. The older children have been preparing and leading parts of the Sunday Eucharist. Most recently they took individual reading parts in our dramatised reading of St Matthew's Passion Narrative on Palm Sunday and were brilliant. They also took part in the Maundy Thursday Footwashing and assisted the Vicar during the Homily slot on Easter morning.
From Easter 2011 we are working on a simple rite for the start of our main Sunday Eucharist to enable everyone to begin worship together and then the children to go off to their own activities before rejoining the main congregation at Communion time.
Newcomers are most welcome - just turn up about 10 to 10 any Sunday morning.
