The Vicar's Decathlon Challenge

By Elaine Bardwell - Posted on 24 December 2011

Have you heard the Olympic Games are being celebrated in London in 2012 - bits of it are also coming to our vicinity. There are lots of Olympic based activities going on for all to share in who wish, inlcuding a major Oxford Diocesan initiative 'The Race Before Us' more info can be found on our Diocesan website:
www.oxford.anglican.org/the-door/features/the-race-before-us.html

The Vicar though has had one of her 'bright ideas' to challenge our youngsters (and anyone else who dares) to complete a unique 'Decathlon' - 10 challenges between Ash Wednesday and Christ the King (25th November).

Basically the Vicar will ask those who would like to take part (all ages welcome) to set themselves a series of 10 goals:, some will be in common and others tailor made. They will range across all aspects of life: physical, intellectual, creative, practical and spiritual. Special awards (decided entirely on a whim by the Vicar) will be made for different categories (a bit like the Onion Growing Competition) and an overall prize for the one who is deemed 'Victor/Victrix ludorum'. Bible reading, raising money for charity, recognition for awards at school or work will be included. Some things can be part of daily life already, other elements will be more challenging.

Leaflets are now available in St Michael's Room and some display materials will appear in the next couple of weeks so that each participant can see their own named figure move around the Olympic track until all 10 goals have been reached and the finishing line can be crossed.

Anyone who would like to take part should ask for a leaflet and return the registration form on the back page to the Vicar. Proof will be needed of successful completion of the chosen goals. And yes the Vicar will be taking part too!
